The Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center now offers a probation-certified and court-recognized Batterers Intervention Program designed to help individuals understand harmful behavior patterns, manage anger, and build healthier relationships. Weekly classes provide accountability, education, and support in a structured environment led by certified facilitators.
What is Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used by one partner to gain or maintain control over another in a relationship. Abuse can take many forms, including:
- Physical abuse
- Emotional or psychological abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Financial control
- Verbal intimidation or threats
Domestic violence affects people of all genders, sexual orientations, ages, and backgrounds. It harms not only the individuals involved but also families, children, and entire communities.
How the Program Helps
The Batterers Intervention Program focuses on long-term behavioral change. Participants learn to:
- Understand the root causes of abusive behavior
- Identify triggers and warning signs of anger or aggression
- Practice non-violent communication techniques
- Develop empathy, accountability, and emotional regulation
- Build healthier relationship habits
The program combines education, guided self-reflection, and group discussion to help participants break the cycle of abuse and develop safer, healthier ways of relating to others.

I was court mandated to participate in the 52-week program, and I was surprised at how easy it was to get started. The staff walked me through everything, and the facilitators were both professional and supportive. I learned how to take responsibility for my actions and develop healthier ways to interact with others.
The facilitators were honest and compassionate, helping me recognize patterns in my behavior and guiding me toward real change. The program made a huge difference in how I handle conflict and emotions in my daily life.
